The Impact of Canada’s Changing Immigration Policy: An Interview with Mikal Skuterud

This week, John and I engage in a lively discussion with economist Mikal Skuterud about Canada's changing migration landscape, challenging some common myths, assessing impacts on housing and more .

Mikal Skuterud, Professor of Economics at Waterloo University, is known for his research-focussed appraisal of Canada's labour and immigration policies. In our wide-ranging interview, Mikal argues that a shift away from the highly-skilled immigration that had previously made Canada successful is threatening the country's success economically and socially. Our discussion topics include:

  • How Canada’s focus on 'tradeable services' including high quality post-secondary education resulted in in an industry selling lower quality degrees as a pathway to permanent residency for candidates who would not normally qualify under our 'points' based immigration system
  • Differences between US and Canada immigration policies, including the place of lower paid labour and illegal migration
  • Why high levels of immigration to Canada has not increased our labour supply in the housing construction sector
  • More
